March 19, 2024 - If we coudl see inside other people's hearts

This is a video I have seen before during hospital orientation. The video is well done, and certainly elicits emotion. The message of this video is the importance of empathy and being mindful of the invisible anxieties and stressors every person experiences.Working in mental health, my career focuses on working with people and their stressors and anxieties.Often people try to hide their stress and anxiety from their friends and family.  Carrying the burden of life’s worries can affect your physical and mental health. Stress can also cause the prefrontal cortex to become under active resulting increased irritability and reactive behaviours (Arnsten, 2009). I think it is important to be mindful of this when we see people acting out of anger. On that note, I think it is also important to remember that anger is a survival skill used to get needs met (Novaco & Talor, 2016). It is important to also approach people whose anger makes us uncomfortable with empathy understanding that they too belong in this video.

February 24, 2024 - six word story

“Science validates humanity” rallied the nurses.

January 27, 2024 - I am your nurse

I Am Your Nurse by Beth Perry

I ease your pain.
I bathe your skin.
I make your bed.
I help you dress.
I meet your needs.
You heal me.

I am your nurse.
I feed you meals.
I give you rest.
I tend your wounds.
I sense your suffering.
I answer your questions.
You teach me.

I am your nurse.
I know your pain.
I share your loneliness.
I feel your despair.
I taste your joy.
I sense your spirit.
You touch my soul.

And sometimes,
for just a moment,
I am you,
and you are me,
and we are one.

Together,
we go beyond the limits
of ordinary experience,
to live the extraordinary

The following is my original stanza created as parallel poetry for the above poem.

I am your nurse.
I am not your mom.

I am not a martyr.

I am not a saint.

I am not your angel.

I am not a hero.

You are confused about my role.
